Does this sound like your windowsill?

"It gives me leaves, and not one flower."
"The buds all dropped before they opened."
"Every video says something different. I'm so confused."
"It was my mother's plant. I can't lose it."

There's no shortage of tips. That's the trouble. Coffee or no coffee. Ice cubes or no ice cubes. One video says water once a week, the next says once a month.

This book gives you one plain answer for each plant: what to do, how much, how often and in which months. All written down, so you never have to pause a video to take notes again.

Twelve plants, in depth

Is your plant in here?

These are the flowering plants people get as gifts, pick up at the grocery store, or inherit from someone they love. Each has its own chapter (the three holiday cactuses share one).

Why it stopped blooming

When something goes wrong

Keep it for years

Repotting an old family plant safely, and taking cuttings so it lives on.

Straight answers

Coffee? Banana peels? Ice cubes?

The book gives every popular kitchen trick a plain verdict, plant by plant: Yes, a nice extra, or skip it. A few examples:

TrickVerdictWhy
Weak brewed coffee, for anthuriumA nice extraGentle and weekly. The bright window makes the flowers.
A banana peel buried in the pot or laid on topSkip itUnproven as plant food, and a rotting peel brings fruit flies and gnats. Compost it.
Rice waterA nice extraGentle but unproven. Strain it and pour out the leftovers, because it sours and draws gnats.
Epsom saltSkip itNo evidence it makes flowers. Unless a plant is truly short of magnesium, it's only more salt in the pot.

A note from Rosie

Why I wrote it all down

Every week someone tells me the same thing. They watched a video, then another one, and now they have six answers to one question. They pause the video and write the numbers on the back of an envelope. Then they lose the envelope.

So here it is, written down once and for all. For each plant: what to do, how much, how often and in which months. The dark for the cactus, the cool nights for the orchid, the rest for the amaryllis. And straight answers about the kitchen tricks, so you know which ones are worth your time.

Most of these plants will bloom again the very next season once the right switch is turned on. Some need a little patience. None of them need luck.
